Watch What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Movie In Theather

As a child, Baby Jane Hudson was the toast of vaudeville. As an adult, however, Baby Jane was overshadowed by her more talented sister, Blanche, who became a top movie star. Then, one night in the early '30s, came the accident, which crippled Blanche for life and which was blamed on a drunken, jealous Jane. Flash-forward to 1962: Jane (Bette Davis), decked out in garish chalk-white makeup, still lives with the invalid Blanche (Joan Crawford) in their decaying L.A. mansion. When Jane isn't tormenting the helpless Blanche by serving her dead rats for breakfast, she is plotting and planning her showbiz comeback. Convinced that her days are numbered if she remains in the house with her addlepated sister, Blanche desperately tries to get away, but all avenues of escape are cut off by the deranged Jane. What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? sparked a trend toward casting venerable Hollywood female stars in such grotesque Grand Guignol melodramas as Lady in a Cage (1964) and Hush...Hush Sweet Charlotte (1965). In addition to revitalizing the careers of Davis and Crawford, whose real-life mutual animosity came through loud and clear, the film made a star of sorts of 24-year-old character actor Victor Buono, cast as a porcine mama's-boy musical composer. Lukas Heller's screenplay was based on the novel by Henry Farrell.~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Review For What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

Aldrich's direction and dynamite performances from the two old troupers make this film an experience.
Don Druker-Chicago Reader

The chain of circumstances grows, violence creating violence. Once the inept, draggy start is passed, the film's pace builds with ever-growing force.
Variety Staff-Variety

The Grand Guignol elements themselves are relatively forced and unconvincing.
-Time Out

There is nothing particularly moving or significant about these two.
Bosley Crowther-New York Times

[A] frightening, darkly comic picture ...
Philip French-Observer [UK]

The on-screen fireworks were reportedly fuelled by off-screen hatred, but the chemistry between the stars is unquestionably hair-raising and upped the Gothic stakes to camp shock levels.
Alan Jones-Radio Times

There are plenty of thrills and no shortage of suspense in this darkly comic horror film.
Andrew Schenker-Little White Lies

Remains fascinatingly warped: an extended study in decaying flesh, set to a score mordantly trying to break into Hooray for Hollywood.
Mike McCahill-Guardian [UK]

The ultimate camp-Gothic bitchfight. Vastly entertaining.
Tim Robey-Daily Telegraph

Remains a masterclass in 'uglying up' and a relevant comment on the destructive nature of celebrity.
Jane Crowther-Total Film

Hag horror doesn't get any better (read: demented) than this. For the film's 50th anniversary, Warner rolls out the red carpet with a sparkling Blu-ray transfer and impressive DigiBook packaging, even if the extras remain the same as on the earlier DVD.
Budd Wilkins-Slant Magazine

[VIDEO] "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane" is a legendary thriller worthy of its two great stars.
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

Depending on your sensibilities, the film is either a black camp comedy or psychological horror %u2013 either way, it's hugely entertaining
Andrew L. Urban-Urban Cinefile

The 1930s Lugosi/Karloff match-ups at Universal Studios only suggested the potential of what a decades-long feud like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford could produce.
Matthew Sorrento-Film Threat

It's still vivid, barnstorming stuff.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

For the viewer, too, this creepy mood-piece is far from a comfortable watch.
Kim Newman-Empire Magazine

Creepy, freaky and memorably histrionic.
Daniel Etherington-Film4

Crawford wisely underacts -- if her performance isn't as showy as Davis's, it's not any less accomplished.
-TV Guide's Movie Guide

Sick! Sick! Sick!
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

...the movie remains a hoot...it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but it is unquestionably fun in its totally off-the-wall manner. (Two-Disc Special Edition)
John J. Puccio-Movie Metropolis
